At Dinting Church of England (VA) Primary school, English is at the foundation of all learning. We aim to provide a high quality education in English which will teach pupils to speak, read and write fluently and enable them to understand and communicate ideas and emotions to others.
Speaking and Listening underpins the development of reading and writing. The quality and variety of language that pupils hear and speak are vital for developing their vocabulary and grammar and their understanding for reading and writing.
We aim to make all of our pupils ‘readers’. We offer a balanced mix of approaches to reading so that our pupils achieve the skills required, a positive attitude, confidence as well as interest. We want to inspire a life-long love of literature, poetry and reading which will open a world of possibilities and opportunities for their futures.
Writing is perhaps the most complex form of communication for pupils to learn as it has many conventions which are difficult to follow and master. We aim to give children meaningful and exciting opportunities to write whilst ensuring that we listen to the pupil’s interests and take account of issues which are of direct relevance in order to motivate them. We aim to enable our pupils to see themselves as ‘writers’, to encourage confidence and the motivation to want to write, whilst having sufficient control over the mechanics of writing to allow for a skilful development of the writing process.
