The Role of the Governing Body

The governing body is responsible for the conduct of the school, and promotes high standards of educational achievement at the school. It is the school’s accountable body. School Governors work together with the Head Teacher in agreeing the aims and conduct of the school, ensuring that the pupils have a full entitlement to the agreed curriculum and managing the school within its allocated budget.

All School Governors are volunteers who give freely of their time and knowledge for the benefit of the school.

Dinting C of E Primary (VA) Governing body consists of  2 Parent Governors, elected by parents with children at this school, 1 Authority Governor, appointed by the Local Education Authority, 8 Foundation Governors,  appointed by the Diocese of Derby (one is Ex Officio), and 2 Staff Governors, elected by staff at this school (Headteacher is Ex Officio)

Governors are appointed to:

  • provide a strategic view of the school by establishing a vision and setting the purpose and aims of the school within an agreed policy framework. It appoints and performance manages the headteacher, agreeing the school improvement strategy which includes setting statutory targets with supporting budgets and staffing structures;
  • monitor and evaluates the work of the school by reviewing the performance of the headteacher, the effectiveness of the policy framework, progress towards targets, and the effectiveness of the school improvement strategy;
  • sign off the self evaluation process and respond to school improvement service and Ofsted reports as necessary. In addition it holds the headteacher to account for the performance of the school and ensures that parents are involved, consulted and informed as appropriate, with information to the community being made available as required.

In order to do this a governing body:

  • works with the headteacher who is responsible for the day to day management of the school
  • agrees policies and practice that assist the headteacher and staff to carry out their responsibilities
  • agrees principles and targets for improvement
  • acts as the critical friend of the school and headteacher
  • receives and discusses reports on the resulting practice and conduct of the school
  • reviews its own working practices
  • works within the regulations for governing bodies; these are laid down by central government and the local authority.

The governors of the school meet regularly throughout the school year in order to facilitate their responsibilities, share information and make key decisions.

Governors Attendance at Meetings

We value the work of all our governors. We recognise that as volunteers their attendance and participation will naturally be dictated by other aspects of their personal and professional lives. While we accept that their attendance at formal meetings is an important part of their role, we also acknowledge and greatly appreciate the considerable time and dedication given over and above these meetings towards our school’s continuing improvement.

How much time it takes up

The amount of time each person gives to the role will vary. However you will need to be willing to:

  • Prepare for meetings. There will be papers that need reading.
  • Attend meetings. The governing body must meet at least once a term, but you may also be asked to serve on at least one committee. Meetings are normally during the evening but may also be during the day.

As a full-time worker will I still have time to be a school governor?

Many governors are in full-time work and most governing body meetings tend to take place in the evening. However, you would need to check carefully the number of meetings you would be expected to attend and when they usually take place. Also bear in mind that you might want to spend time getting to know the school in other ways and joining in its activities, which may take place during the daytime.

Support for governors

  • As a new school governor you can receive a nationally designed induction programme covering roles and responsibilities
  • Subsequent training on a wide range of activities
  • Each governing body has a clerk to provide administrative and procedural support.
